Rare Beauty True to Myself Foundation Review on Mature Skin

Finding a matte foundation that works for mature skin can sometimes feel nearly impossible. So many formulas either cling to dry patches, settle into texture, or leave your skin looking overly flat by the end of the day. But the new Rare Beauty True to Myself Natural Matte Longwear Foundation caught my attention for a few reasons.

This foundation quickly became one of those easy, reliable foundations that I keep reaching for. It controls shine beautifully without leaving my skin feeling dry or uncomfortable, which is a rare combination when it comes to matte formulas.

My Skin Type

I’m 50 years old and have sensitive skin with rosacea. My skin type is oily/combination, with normal skin around the perimeter and dryness on occasion. I also tend to get shine/oil breakthrough in the center of my face.

Rare Beauty True to Myself Foundation Review

What Makes This Foundation Different?

The biggest thing I noticed right away is that this foundation doesn’t behave like a traditional matte formula. Instead of creating that heavy or powdery finish that can make your skin look older throughout the day, this one gives my skin a much softer, more natural look. My pores look blurred, my skin tone looks even, and it has a freshness to it.

Rare Beauty describes it as a self-setting natural matte foundation with medium-to-full buildable coverage, and I actually think this description is accurate. Even better, it feels lightweight on my skin and never develops that tight feeling that so many long-wearing or matte foundations can have by the afternoon.

Shade Matching Notes

If you’re ordering online, I do think the undertones are worth paying attention to. I originally picked shade 13 Light Neutral because the description sounded perfect for my undertones, but it pulled much warmer and more orange on my skin than I expected. I ended up exchanging it for shade 11 Light Cool, which surprisingly leans much more neutral on my skin and blends seamlessly into my neck.

If you’re in between shades, I would recommend swatching in-store if possible!

The Texture

At first glance, the texture appears thick, like it might be difficult to blend. But it actually has a light, whipped consistency that blends very easily and layers beautifully without becoming cakey.

One thing I appreciate is how customizable the coverage is. With a very thin layer, my skin still shows through naturally, almost like a skin tint, but if I want additional coverage around redness or discoloration, it builds easily without appearing heavy.

My Number One Application Tip

After testing different application methods, I found that less product works best. Even if you want more coverage, this is not the type of foundation you want to apply in a single thick layer. The best finish happens when you start with a thin layer and slowly build only where you need extra coverage.

Using this technique allows the foundation to melt into your skin much more naturally and also improves wear time. I also prefer applying this with a dense brush instead of a sponge to help work the product into my skin smoothly, especially around pores and texture. Sometimes I press it in afterward with a sponge, but it’s not always necessary. You can see my video below for more about that.

Prepping Your Skin for Application

Since this foundation is marketed as matte, my first instinct was to use extra-hydrating skincare underneath it. But the days I did this were the days I noticed it broke down faster and didn’t wear well.

Because this formula already contains hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and other skincare components, layering more hydrating ingredients underneath can almost become too much and cause wear issues.

Once I simplified things and followed my usual skincare routine, the foundation wore beautifully all day.

If you try this foundation and struggle with wear time, I recommend experimenting with lighter prep and thin layers before giving up on it!

How it Performs Throughout the Day

This foundation has been especially impressive for me, even in warm, humid weather. My skin stays balanced throughout the day, even in my oilier areas. And my normal-to-dry areas still feel comfortable.

It also doesn’t require much maintenance once it’s on. I always lightly set my makeup with powder because of the humidity where I live, but overall, this wears very consistently on my skin day-to-day, from morning through evening.

Final Thoughts

I think this foundation could be a really great option if you’ve struggled to find a matte formula that works well on mature or combination skin. It gives my skin a smoother, softer look while still helping keep shine under control, and that balance can be difficult to find.

Of course, complexion products are never one-size-fits-all, and your skin may respond differently depending on your skincare routine, climate, and skin type. But overall, this has easily been one of my favorite recent foundation launches, especially as we head into the hotter months.

  7. Testing the Rare Beauty True to Myself Natural Matte Longwear Foundation on mature skin reveals how modern formulas are rethinking soft-matte coverage without the heavy, cakey baggage. Because mature complexions often battle fine lines, texture, and shifting dryness, this formula’s self-priming, lightweight fluid texture glides on smoothly rather than immediately sinking into creases. It provides buildable medium-to-full coverage that blurs enlarged pores and controls excess shine in the T-zone while maintaining a soft, natural finish instead of drying into an unflattering mask.
