The Best Hydrating Lip Balms
No matter the season, a good lip balm is essential. Sun, wind, air conditioning… there’s always something trying to dry out your lips. For me, few things are more annoying than that tight, dry, flaky feeling.
That’s where a really good lip balm comes in. I’ve rounded up the best hydrating formulas that will keep your lips soft, smooth, and happy, whether you’re applying before heading out for the day or winding down at night.

What to Look for in a Hydrating Lip Balm
Before we get to the good stuff, let’s talk about what actually makes a lip balm hydrating, because not all balms are created equally. The best ones don’t just sit on top of your lips. They lock in moisture and help repair your skin barrier.
Look for:
- Hyaluronic acid to draw in moisture.
- Peptides to help plump and smooth your lips.
- Nourishing butters and oils, such as shea, cocoa, or jojoba, to keep your lips soft and supple.
There’s also a difference between a glossy balm that makes your lips look hydrated and a proper treatment that actually delivers lasting moisture. If you want a quick hit of shine, a gloss-like balm does the trick. But if your lips are feeling dry or chapped, a treatment formula will give them the deep, long-lasting hydration they really need.
The Best Hydrating Lip Balms
Ole Henrickson Pout Preserve Hydrating Peptide Lip Treatment
This is one of my all-time favorite hydrating lip treatments. It’s packed with peptides and nourishing oils and butters that help smooth and plump, but without that heavy, sticky feeling some glosses have.
It contains a lip-specific peptide, tripeptide-1, which promotes collagen production, hydrates and volumizes, and helps define the lip line. I fully credit this ingredient with restoring pigmentation to the perimeter of my lips. This area was faded before using a different lip treatment (below) with tripeptide-1, so that I had to spend a lot of time lining and evening out my lip line. I no longer have to do that. In fact, it almost looks like I have lip liner on naturally now! It’s an ingredient I look for in lip balms and treatments because I’ve seen what it can do.
The texture is glossy and lightweight, making it perfect for everyday wear. But it’s not so lightweight that it slides right off either. For me, the texture is perfect.
It also has a subtle, naturally sweet scent that’s noticeable but not overwhelming. And the sleek, easy-to-use packaging makes application easy for day or night. It wears comfortably throughout the day and hydrates your lips without having to reapply every hour.
Clinique Moisture Surge Lip Hydro-Plump Treatment Balm
For hydration without the fuss, this lip balm delivers. The formula is hydrating and completely fragrance-free. So it’s perfect if you don’t like scented products. It melts right in with a soft, cushiony texture that feels more like a treatment than a lip balm.
The packaging is no-frills. It’s lightweight, mess-free, and easy to toss in the smallest of bags. It’s also a fantastic option for overnight hydration, so you can wake up with smooth, moisturized lips.
Drunk Elephant Lippe Balm
I have had this balm in my rotation for years! It’s packed with nourishing oils and antioxidants, helping strengthen your moisture barrier to keep dryness at bay. It’s the original lip balm that started my tripeptide-1 journey mentioned above that brought pigmentation back to the perimeter of my lips. The texture is smooth, and it glides on easily without that waxy feel some heavier balms have.
Lippe Balm is especially great for super dry or chapped lips, making it a perfect winter staple. Plus, the packaging is as cute as it is practical!
Tula ‘Glaze Plumping Lip Treatment
This is one of Tula’s newest product launches, and not only is the packaging fun, but it actually hydrates. The formula is packed with peptides to help smooth and plump, as well as nourishing oils to keep your lips feeling soft even after it wears off. The finish is glossy, without any stickiness. You can use this both as a daytime balm and as a lip treatment.

Essence The Super Peptide Glossy Lip Treatment
This lip treatment is proof that you don’t have to spend a lot to get a really great lip product. It’s glossy and formulated with nourishing ingredients like peptides and hyaluronic acid. It’s a fantastic affordable option for daily moisture and shine!
Tatcha The Kissu Lip Mask
If you want a lip treatment that truly feels indulgent, this is it. This mask has a silky, jelly-like texture that melts into your lips, delivering a big dose of hydration without feeling sticky or heavy. It’s formulated with squalene and peach extract to lock in moisture, plus Japanese camellia oil to help nourish and smooth.
You can absolutely wear this during the day, but I love using it at night as an overnight treatment for soft, plush lips.
How to Maximize Lip Hydration
Even the best lip balm can only do so much if your lips are parched to begin with.
A few small habits can make a big difference in how soft and hydrated they remain day to day.
- Use a lip scrub to gently exfoliate your lips 1-2 times a week to help remove dry skin so your balms can fully sink in.
- Apply a hydrating serum or balm with ingredients like hyaluronic acid or peptides first, then seal with a thicker balm or ointment.
- Drink more water throughout the day to naturally hydrate your lips and your body! Many people forget that we have to be adequately hydrated from the inside for our skin, lips, mouth, and eyes to stay hydrated. We can do all the things in the world perfectly on the outside, but unless we drink enough water, it’s all for nothing.
At the end of the day, a good lip balm is one of those small essentials that can make a big difference, especially when the air gets cooler and drier. Whether you love a high-shine finish or something more subtle, the right formula keeps your lips soft, smooth, and comfortable all day (and night) long. These are the ones I reach for again and again, and they’ve never let me down when my lips need some extra love.
