Summer Skincare for Mature Skin

Summer Skincare for Mature Skin

Everyone experiences facial changes with age. These changes stem from fat, bone, and collagen loss and can begin to show in your 30s. So no matter what decade you’re in, whether you’re in your 30s or your 80s, it’s important to keep your skin in the best condition possible as long as possible.

What are some of my go-to skincare products for mature skin? Today I am sharing several of my all-time favorite summer skincare products including cleansers, serums, treatments, moisturizers, and beauty tools I have tried and recommend! Some are effective for preventing premature aging of the skin, and some simply protect and nourish mature skin.

CLEANSERS

Some people dismiss cleansers, saying that since they can be rinsed off, they’re not important. But they’re actually an extremely important step in your skincare routine – especially for mature skin. A cleanser needs to be gentle yet effective without stripping the skin. Here are a few of my favorites for various skin types.

mature skin cleanser

Tatcha The Camellia Cleansing Oil is a beautiful, luxurious makeup-removing cleanser to use at night before your regular cleanser. It gently and effectively removes makeup and impurities from the face while nourishing mature skin with the hydrating benefits of camellia oil. This cleanser is good for all skin types but primarily focuses on hydration for dry or combination skin.

makeup cleanser

Another option for double cleansing at night before your regular cleanser is Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm – perfect for gently and effectively removing makeup. It melts away makeup and impurities without stripping mature skin of its natural moisture.

skin cleanser

Struggling with redness or irritation when cleansing? Glow Recipe Avocado Ceramide Moisture Barrier Cleanser provides a moisture-boosting cleanse with ceramides and avocado, supporting mature skin’s natural barrier function.

cleanser

My holy-grail favorite cleanser, Tatcha The Rice Wash Skin-Softening Cleanser contains amazing ingredients for leaving your skin glowing and hydrated. Japanese women have used leftover water from rinsing rice to use in their beauty routines because it’s a rich source of vitamins A, B2, B12, and E and works to soften skin and give it a healthy glow. The rice wash used this as its inspiration, using Japanese rice powder, along with hyaluronic acid and Okinawa red algae to leave your skin looking and feeling refreshed, supple, and never stripped.

SERUMS & TREATMENTS

There are a number of serums, treatments, and toners I could share here, but I have consolidated this list to just a few tried and true products so as not to overwhelm you.

vitamin c

Adding Drunk Elephant C-Firma Fresh Vitamin-C Day Serum to your morning routine can help to brighten, protect, and firm mature skin. It’s formulated with potent vitamin C, reducing the appearance of fine lines and uneven tone and texture.

Murad Retinal ReSculpt Overnight Treatment is a fantastic serum for all skin types to use at night that targets visible signs of aging by smoothing the appearance of deep-set wrinkles and crepey skin and lifting the look of sagging skin. And it does this while being gentle and hydrating.

First, you may be wondering about the difference between retinal and retinol. It’s basically the amount of time to see results. Retinol goes through two steps in order to convert into active retinoic acid: from retinol to retinal, and then from retinal to retinoic acid. But retinal only needs one step before it converts into retinoic acid…which seems great. But this increased speed and faster results usually come with a price, which is an increased risk of skin irritation and reactions like redness and irritation. That’s where Murad comes in.

Murad’s encapsulated retinal delivery system is derived from technology used in pharmaceutical applications, so it gives the product added stability and targeted delivery. So it’s two times more effective than free retinal while still being gentle and hydrating because of ingredients like olive, oat and alpha glucan that boost moisture and restore the skin’s barrier.

skin spray

Another hydrating mist, Jurlique Hydrating Mist refreshes and hydrates mature skin with a rejuvenating mist, enhancing overall moisture levels. You can even use the spray over makeup to hydrate throughout the day. The rosewater scent is super subtle and refreshing as well!

neck serum

Clinically proven to support skin’s natural collagen production, Nécessaire The Neck Serum is specifically formulated to firm and hydrate the delicate neck area, combating signs of aging and promoting a more youthful look. This lightweight lotion is great for all skin types.

mature skin treatment

Enhance your night routine with Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow AHA Night Treatment. The treatment works to exfoliate and hydrate skin overnight, promoting a youthful glow with watermelon and key ingredient AHA. This is a treatment to be applied over your other skincare like a mask. I use this a couple of nights each week (and skip retinol products on those nights), applying it like a lotion. It sinks in nicely and works its magic as I sleep.

MOISTURIZERS

The extremely popular Drunk Elephant Protini Polypeptide Cream has been a staple in my life for a long time. It’s fantastic for moisturizing without feeling heavy. Plus it combats signs of aging by delivering essential nutrients and firming peptides to mature skin.

moisturizer

Another fan favorite, IT Cosmetics Confidence in a Cream Anti-Aging Hydrating Moisturizer hydrates and rejuvenates mature skin, visibly reducing fine lines and improving texture for a more youthful appearance. I would recommend this moisturizer for normal to dry skin as oily skin types may find the formula too heavy.

SUNSCREENS

SPF

Looking for some light everyday coverage? I love Summer Fridays ShadeDrops Mineral Milk Sunscreen SPF 30 for a soft, natural-looking finish with a subtle glow. The SPF protects mature skin from harmful UV rays, preventing premature aging and photo-damage while providing a lightweight mineral milk formula. This lightweight milky liquid formula sinks in beautifully and wears well under makeup and is perfect for all skin types.

SPF

A mature skin favorite, Paula’s Choice RESIST Super-Light Daily Wrinkle Defense Face Sunscreen SPF 30 is specifically formulated with nice skincare ingredients to combat aging and fine lines. This SPF with its soft matte finish wears beautifully under makeup on my combo-oily skin. For dry skin types, I recommend Paula’s Choice RESIST Youth-Extending Daily Hydrating Face Sunscreen SPF 50.

LIP CARE

sensitive lip balm

One of my personal favorites, Drunk Elephant Lippe Balm nourishes and plumps mature lips, reducing the appearance of fine lines for a smoother pout. It can also replenish the pigmentation along the perimeter of your lips, which I’ve personally experienced. I cannot recommend this product enough! It hydrates beautifully and is worth every penny. I’ve repurchased this numerous times and will always keep it on hand.

BEAUTY TOOLS

It’s my job to test products in order to help you make better buying decisions. I’ve tested loads of beauty tools and devices. Many are junk and are completely worthless. But there are a few that have stuck with me that I now swear by. I probably never would have discovered these had I not tested them out. Below are the ones that I currently use on a regular basis and why.

gua sha

I think a gua sha is essential in any beauty routine for encouraging lymphatic drainage and circulation while reducing facial tension, thus benefiting mature skin’s overall tone and texture. I have a gua sha tutorial on my youtube channel if you’re unsure how to use one. You can visibly see the results after using it. And the benefits accumulate over time. I cannot speak highly enough about how effective this simple, inexpensive tool is!

At a higher price point, LED red light therapy is a technology I firmly believe in for boosting collagen production, which we lose as we age. It helps even out skin tone, smooth texture and fine lines, tighten and firm skin, and clear congested skin. I’ve also used it when I’ve had breakouts and rosacea flareup from testing products and it’s cleared them up incredibly fast. Because LED helps with inflammation, it also helps with chronic pain and is used in many PT clinics. I have both the CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Face Mask and Higher Dose Mask (save 15% with my code STEPHMARIE15) and enjoy both. I also have the Tommie Copper Infrared Neck Wrap for upper back and neck pain.

I love and use the Nira Precision laser and have shown before/afters of the amazing difference I’ve seen in my undereye texture. It’s an at-home targeted FDA-cleared laser that’s clinically proven to reduce wrinkles and fine lines by stimulating natural collagen production for younger-looking skin in 90 days. It takes two minutes a day and has a small enough tip to target hard-to-treat areas around the eyes and mouth. There are 5 comfort levels to choose from and you don’t have the pain, redness, and downtime like you get from clinic lasers. I’m glad I took before photos because I honestly didn’t notice the difference until I compared my photos. When I did I was blown away.

The new ZIIP Halo has been a big surprise for me. It combines nanocurrent and microcurrent for immediate and long-term results that give you glowing, sculpted, lifted, smoother, brighter skin. You can use it on your own or with pre-programmed app tutorials that target the full face or specific areas. Each treatment is quick and easy. I love being able to see an immediate lifting and brightening from the microcurrent and getting the long-term effects at the cellular level from the nanocurrent.

Today’s post highlights a curated selection of some tried and true skin care products for mature skin. Ranging from cleansers to beauty devices, these favorites have proven effective in addressing various skin concerns. Some products focus on preventing premature aging, while others excel in providing protection and nourishment to mature skin. With this comprehensive list at hand, achieving a radiant and healthy complexion is well within reach if you’re seeing reliable and effective skincare solutions for your mature skin.
