Summer Fashion Tips to Beat the Heat & Stay Stylish

With the scorching heat of summer upon us, it can be challenging to stay fashionable while keeping cool and comfortable. I get it, I live in New Orleans, one of the hottest, most humid places around! However, dressing stylishly and staying comfortable in the hot weather is possible! By choosing the right fabrics, colors, and styles, you can create chic summer outfits that will keep you looking and feeling great. Here are some valuable tips to help you stay stylish and beat the heat this summer.

FABRICS

When the temperature rises, it’s essential to choose fabrics that are lightweight and breathable. Natural fabrics like cotton, linen, and chambray are excellent choices as they allow air to circulate, keeping you cool and preventing excessive sweating. Avoid synthetic materials that trap heat and moisture, such as polyester or nylon.

The Signature Poplin matching set from Madewell is a summer wardrobe staple, featuring a breezy and lightweight fabric with a cute stripe pattern that combines comfort and style, allowing you to effortlessly create a stylish look. The set’s coordinated top and bottom in classic poplin fabric offer versatility, making it easy to mix and match with other pieces for endless outfit possibilities. COLORS

Dark colors tend to absorb more heat, making you feel hotter in the summer sun. Instead, opt for light, pastel, or neutral shades that reflect sunlight and help you stay cool. Whites, pastels, and mid-tones are all fantastic choices for creating a summery and fresh look. This cotton dress for less than $40 combines light fabric with a casual vibe and offers several color choices. I also love this midi-dress with its flutter sleeves. It’s appropriate for many occasions. I recently did an Amazon try-on where I showed some options that would fit here as well.

LAYERS

Layering is not exclusive to winter fashion. I find layering in the summer to be very practical since the temperature fluctuations between the outside heat and the cold indoors can be so drastic. You can experiment with lightweight layers to create interesting and stylish outfits. Opt for sheer or breathable fabrics like chiffon, denim, chambray, cotton, or organza for your layers. You can wear a lightweight cardigan, kimono, or a cropped jacket over a simple top or dress to add depth and visual interest to your look without compromising on comfort.

FIT

Tight-fitting clothes can restrict airflow and cause discomfort in hot weather. Embrace loose, flowy silhouettes that allow your skin to breathe. Opt for dresses, skirts, and wide-leg pants that offer comfort and freedom of movement. Avoid clingy fabrics and tight-fitting clothes that can make you feel sweaty and uncomfortable. SUN PROTECTION

A stylish hat not only adds flair to your summer outfit but also protects you from the sun’s harmful rays. FOOTWEAR

Summer calls for comfortable footwear that allows your feet to breathe. When your feet are hot, you often feel hotter overall. Opt for open-toe sandals, wedges, or comfy sneakers that provide both style and comfort. Avoid heavy shoes made of thick materials that can make your feet sweat and feel uncomfortable in the heat.
